No.8 Landmine

Nov 5, 2024

The No 8 mine is a South African a High-Explosive-Blast (HE-Blast) circular bakelite bodied, Anti-Vehicle (AV) cased minimum metal anti-tank blast mine, which is designed to damage or destroy a vehicle by its HE-Blast effect with a conventional pressure fuzing.. The mine has a large pressure plate on top of which is an oversize arming lever whose position at either of two sets of lugs either indicates “ARMED” or “SAFE”. The mine can be fitted with a number of electronic anti-handling devices as well as seismic and magnetic influence devices. The mine is found in Angola, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

It is a hand-laid blast landmine with la Low-Metal-Content (LMC). The landmine has a rounded body which resembles a stubby barrel, with a flat top and bottom with a rope-carrying handle secured to the side. The top has a rough pattern engraved on its surface (to aid in camouflage) and a pivoting arming handle secured in the centre. The handle can be moved from the S-safe position to the A-armed position by lifting the end and shifting it 90°. The landmine is a glossy Brown colour with a Red band around the top edge.

The No 8 contains 7kg of RDX/TNT and it is actuated by 150kg of pressure. It has a LMC and it is difficult to locate using metal detectors under most field conditions, it can be defeated by blast over-pressure from explosive breaching systems.
