It was not actually a member of the crew, but Major Policarpo Sánchez Pileta (age 44) that had been wounded. As the two helicopters descended to attack UNITA troops, forty kilometers southwest of Tempué, UNITA troops fired on the helicopter and the officer was hit and mortally wounded.
