Jannie was a legendary Sergeant-Major within the Selous Scouts. Prior to Op Long John, he had two years of successful leading 3-man teams on successful pseudo-operations behind enemy lines without any external support. At the time of his death, he was only 30 years old. He was posthumously awarded Member of the Order of the Legion of Merit (MLM) medal.
