The 81 mm Mortar Pit at #Rundu. The sand had the same composition as beach sand, requiring the sides of the pit to be secured with sandbags. Note the numbered ‘rigtings palings’ (directional poles). These allowed the ‘Number 1s’ on the gun to bring the weapon quickly into action and to fire on predetermined targets
