Who doesn’t love a ‘mine hound’? This great image of a SADF dog handler and his dog on operations in Ovamboland, South West Africa/ Namibia. This particular ‘Black Labrador’ is trained to sniff out explosives. Vital in a war so dominated by land mines.

Description
54 SA Infantry Battalion (54 SAI) [Afr: 54 SA lnfanteriebataljon (54 SAI)], better known as just 54 Battalion (54 Bn) [Afr: 54 Bataljon (54 Bn)], was formed as one of a few Modular Battalions in 1976. It was based at Eenhana in SWA with a core of Permanent Force officers and NCOs on 2- to 4-year tours, and National Servicemen in their second year of service. Sub-units were attached according to the varying requirements, and that’s why it was referred to as `modular’. 54 Battalion’s main responsibility was to secure the area around Eenhana
