Captain Piet van der Riet MLM, BCR with his young son Adam, circa. 1970s

Piet was a highly accomplished Selous Scout operator, spending lots of time on the “sharp end” of the #Rhodesian Security Forces during his time in the army. For combat gallantry during an engagement against communist terrorists, he was awarded the rare Bronze Cross of Rhodesia. Fresh from the field, he still sported a massive beard when he received his award. You can still find pictures of the grizzled Selous Scout Warrant Officer in many publications during his BCR ceremony.

After being awarded the BCR, Piet would commission from the ranks, eventually reaching the rank of Captain. He would also be awarded a rarer induction into the Legion of Merit, making him one of the most highly decorated Selous Scout operators in the short 14 year history of Rhodesia’s Bush War. He would also be given the rare honour of carrying the Selous Scout’s regimental colours during the first formation parade in their history.

Given the extensive requirements of the units operationally, the unit only had large formation parades twice in their history. The first time was in the Spring of 1978, and for the momentous occassion Piet would be front and center, flanked by two black NCOs. The colours were extremely heavy compared to other military flags, as they consisted of the additional buffalo horns and a large osprey plaque, similar in style to ancient Roman legions. Despite having to switch out, Piet remained front and center during the parade and can be seen in many publications. #selousscouts
