A superb photo of the three ship Dakota formation en route to the Chimoio strike. On the far Dak, you can clearly see the anti Strela mod fitted to the engine exhaust. The Dak with serial 53 (nearest camera) is one of the original Daks to SRAF/RRAF, and 03 (leading) is ex-SAAF 6841 taken on charge 7.02.64.

There is a lot to be said for the SAAF Alouette III gunship pilots, skill and a real sense of on edge flying would be an understatement. Here a SAAF Alouette flies up close and personal to a moving SADF “Buffel” APC (Armoured Personnel Carrier) somewhere during the Border War.

As if things were not dangerous enough on the South West Africa (Nambia) border……Here’s a snake in the “longdrop” (ablution tent)! We are loving the “clothing optional, I just need my assault rifle” approach to deal with this.
This photo was taken in 1968 at Kasikili on the South West Africa (Namibia)/Botswana border, courtesy Derek de Beer.
